Does time go more quickly, Or am I Aging more rapidly?*

Once I forgot how old I was

When Adam and I started [talking/going out/dating] he once asked me how old I was. I instinctively said: 26

Thought nothing of it. Until one day I was thinking about how 26 would be a good age to get married and I REALIZED… I was 27! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

OK well the earth rotates around its axis every 24 hours creating one day at the same time it is rotating around the sun which takes 365 days what we call One year. So no matter how much you wish you could change it, you will continue to get one year older every 365 days.

OK but SERIOUSLY how did I forget I changed age? Well I Celebrated my birthday in Ethiopia about a week after I arrived. We ate a piece of soggy cake- not much of a celebration. So in my head no celebration= no birthday = no aging.

THEN I PANICKED…how was I going to tell Adam I am older than I told him, and that I forgot…not that Plausible huh?

I devised a plan. When Brooke turned 26 in July I would tell him OH my gosh! I must be 27…
Then one day he and I were talking.

THEboy: Babe I need to tell you something
Me: ok, whats up?
THEboy: I lied about something and I need you to know
Me: ok…. (Thinking oh my gosh WHAT could it be. I am a girl so I automatically went for WORST CASE scenario- already married, pending divorce, three children, dying of some strange illness)
THEboy: remember when I said I grew up swimming?
Me: yeah
THEboy: Well… I don’t really know how to swim.
Me: WHAT you don’t know how to swim?
THEboy: No
Me: BUT you live in D/Z there are like 7 lakes in your home town. How can you NOT swim?
THEboy: SEE that is what everyone says so I just tell them I can swim. But I don’t think we should plan on surfing lessons during the honeymoon or I might die.
Me (laughing): ok we won’t go to Puerto Rico until you can swim. I bet I could teach you in our pool
Then conversation went on from there. THIS is when I should have said: oh and I lied, I’m 27 but I totally spaced it.

So weeks and weeks go bye and one day we are talking.
THEboy says: I am 25 and you are 27 right babe?
Me: yeah I thought I was 26 but I forgot about my birthday
THEboy: yeah I know I saw you writing your birth date on something a long time ago.
Me: oh good I was trying to find a good way to tell you.
THEboy: who cares?
Me: ME! And if you don’t care, I’ll start telling all my friends you are 29.
THEboy: HEY don’t make me older than I am just because you can’t remember your birthday

I really am thinking I should stay 27 for a while, at least until Adam catches up!

& I want to be birthday people. We celebrated birthdays growing up with dinner. Sometimes a party. Some people have these amazing birthday traditions. If you do, let me know what they are. I am in the market to spruce up our family traditions.

*I have a theory- like a real one, that I think is pretty good about how to explain this phenomenon.

When you are 10 and you CAN'T wait for your [birthday/summer/Christmas] time seems to go sooooo slow.  Probably becuase 1 year = 10% of  your ENTIRE LIFE. Being a proportianally large piece of  your life.

When you are 27 and think you are 26 because you forgot your birthday 1 year = 3.7% of your life, being a proportinally small piece of your life.

So the older you get, the smaller portion of your life one year is. Thus making time appear to go faster.

Imagine when you are 60 years old and 1 year= 1.66% of your entire life.
WEIRD.
time just keeps going faster and faster.

  2. I have to always think about how old I am before I answer. Sometimes I have to figure it out in my head thinking, "I was born this year, it is now this year, ok, that would make me...."

  3. I go by how I feel. Like today, though technically 32, I feel about 20 :)

  4. i think your theory is spot on. proportionality. that's what it is. is that a word?

i tend to jump a year. i always add a year on. not good. not good at all.
